The Island

Lying just north of the Lyngen Alps, Arnøya, is roughly 275 square kilometers with a couple tiny villages and 250 total residents. It is very mountainous with excellent ski touring in alpine terrain with peaks ranging from 600-1100 meters. The islands of Laukøya and Kågen are also easily accessible via ferry, allowing for day trips from Singla.

The Place

Called Singla by locals, is a historic homestead that is in the process of being re-imagined as a base for arts, research and adventure. First homesteaded in the 1850s it consists of a handful of buildings from generations of fiskerbonde or the fisherman-farmers life, including an old pier, boathouse, barn, cottage, sauna, and small working lighthouse, complete with all of the tools and treasures of years gone by.

The accomodation

The small farmhouse cottage has snug double occupancy rooms and a kitchen and living room for eating group meals and relaxing by the cozy woodstove. The house provides rustic accommodations, trading modern conveniences for the rich stories and charm of the spaces. We have electricity and running water for cooking and washing, and encourage sea dips paired with sauna bathing (there are no shower or laundry facilities available). The bathroom contains a mountain hut-style incinerating toilet. We look forward to sharing Scandinavian traditions like Fika (afternoon coffee with fresh baked treats) and wild favorites from fjell and fjord together.

Backcountry Creative Retreat

April 16-22, 2025

This week is open for individuals who want to explore Singla and the island of Arnøya in all of its winter wonderland glory, but at a slower ski pace that allows for plenty of time to observe and capture the inspirations of the Arctic. We will enjoy daily adventures around the island on backcountry skis, with an emphasis on safe, moderate terrain, and stops along the way to sketch at a mountain hut or en plein air as weather allows.

Hannah will lead simple creative exercises and prompts throughout the week, making the most of our outside time or facilitating cozy projects by the fire on evenings and stormy days. No creative experience is needed and a curated kit of supplies will be yours to use and keep. Other activities will include sauna sessions, optional icy dips, warming family style meals, and time to rest, read, reflect, and generally recharge.

Winter Resident Caretakers

During the mørktid or dark time in the middle of winter, the sun does not rise above the horizon at Singla. Instead it sends out a pale twilight at midday and makes space for spectacular arrays of Northern Lights to dance across the sky. It is a unique experience, though not for the faint of heart as the storms and snows of this season can be punishing and access to services extremely limited. Joining visitors to this winter landscape are pods of orca and humpback whales, who follow the herring schools. Other winter fauna include the large arctic hares and snow white ptarmigan that are plentiful in this region.

If you are intrigued by this special part of the arctic year, we are looking for winter caretakers to keep the pipes warm and do a small projects in advance of the summer season. Dates are flexible but roughly run for 3 months or more, October-February. We ask that caretakers come as a pair (or more).
